Seven Things Not To Consume For Best Fertility Chances

By Scott McLeod

Products Containing CAFFEINE

* Consuming roughly 300 mg of caffeine has demonstrated to have a noticeable impact on conception ability. There is about 100 mg caffeine in 1 cup of coffee and 50 to 80 mg in caffeinated soft-drinks such as Coke and Mountain Dew. If you can remove caffeine from your diet than do it but if your cravings can't be held off just make sure you aren't taking any more than 200 mg per day.

Sugar, Soft-drinks and Pasteurized Juice

* High concentrations of sugars in very sweet products (e.g. candy bars, pastries), sodas and pasteurized juices have a negative effect on fertility. Simple sugars cause an abrupt spike in blood sugar levels and subsequently insulin. This causes the hormonal balance in the body to get thrown off. It is also important to avoid artificial sweetener especially aspartame but also Splenda (sucralose). You may use alternatives such as maple syrup, agave nectar, stevia and honey.

Alcohol Consumption

* Current studies on alcohol and fertility rates show that women drinking two alcoholic drinks per day contribute to a significant ( 60% ) decrease in fertility. You may have thought not to drink during pregnancy but if you're having problems conceiving you may just want to give up 'the bottle' early. Men should also avoid alcohol as it decreases sperm count. It may entice men to know that alcohol lowers testosterone levels and increases estrogen levels.

Cigarettes & Smoking

* Research strongly indicates decreased fertility amongst couples who smoke. Women smoking decreases the odds of conceptions but also their male counterparts contribute to a lower fertility rate if they smoke. Smoking reduces sperm count in men as well as causes DNA damage.

Soy Foods

* It has been demonstrated that soy acts to mimic the hormone estrogen within the body. Your body tries to compensate for what it believes is higher levels of estrogen and then unwittingly causes hormonal imbalance that can retard the fertility process. Avoid foods that are of a processed soy origin. These products include soy burgers, proteins, milk, cheeses... the list goes on. Men, you are also affected by soy in regards to hormones.

Foods from Genetically Modified Organisms ( GMO )

* GMO or Genetically Modified Organism foods are laboratory experiments without a significant body of research proving their safety despite FDA approval. More and more GMOs are found or highly suspected to cause a growing body of unforeseen health consequences. Research GMO free food and do your best to find products that do not contain genetically modified ingredients. GMO foods are highly suspected as a predator on your fertility ability.

Foods that are "Fat Free"

* Fat-free foods are processed to remove the fat content, in the 'process' the simple sugar content is usually increased, once again resulting in spikes of blood sugar and hormonal cascades leading to imbalance and ultimately decreased fertility. We once again want to avoid processed foods but more importantly we must understand that fats are the major components of the hormones that are regulating fertility. Harvard studies showed that women who consumed full fat dairy products as opposed to the other study group who consumed fat-free dairy had higher fertility rates. The proof is in the pudding so to speak ; )
